August marks the end of summer, the start of school, and overall a lot of changes. The leaves will soon begin to change, nights come earlier, and the temperature gets colder (well, that hasn’t really happened yet but me and my sweaters are eagerly awaiting the autumn weather). It was a busy month for sure, filled with highs and lows. My sister moved to Knoxville, I started my third year of college, I pet sat a lot, my car flooded, I had a sleepover with my best friend, worked a lot, and dealt with some family struggles. Through it all, there are always bright spots that be found shining through the darkness. Here are some things that provided light to me in August, and hopefully some of them can be a source of light for you!

Glossier Boy Brow – Where has this product been all of my life? I’m not gonna lie, I’m not the best at doing my brows. When the trend came the really shape your brows, I never learned how. My sister often poked fun at the way my eyebrows looked. Glossier’s Boy Brow has changed the game. It’s so easy to use, gives my brows volume, and keeps the hairs in place all day. I was a little skeptical to use it thinking it wouldn’t do much, but BOY was I wrong. I’m never going back to a brow pencil.

Back to School Shopping – Call me a nerd if you want, but I love back to school shopping. Getting new notebooks, pencils, pens, and all sort of supplies tend to really excite me! It’s one of the best parts of preparing to go back to school. Also, I’ve only had one week of classes but I’m really enjoying the classes I’m in. All of my professors seem really nice and I’ve made friends in all of them. I’m really excited to see where this semester takes me!

The Carrie Diaries on Netflix – After seeing clips of episodes from The Carrie Diaries pop up on my Instagram discover feed, I decided to give the show a watch. I’m really glad that I did! I’ve never seen Sex and the City, so I wasn’t sure if I’d like this show but I really did. However, it did make me wish I was in high school in the 80s. I’d love to just let my curly hair get as big as possible and whack a huge, neon bow in it every day. Plus, the blue eyeliner I rocked in middle school would have been perfect! I also now wish to be a writer in New York City who wears fabulous clothes every day.  I’m pretty sure it only took me a week to finish both seasons. I’ve been known to skip scenes in TV shows that I find “boring” because I have an attention span the size of a flea, but I never did that in any episodes of The Carrie Diaries. Follow up, why could there not have been more than two seasons?!

Fall Scented Everything – Yeah, that’s right! Fall scents have returned to candles, room diffusers, car air fresheners, soaps, and more. I couldn’t be happier about it! I did make myself wait until the end of August before buying any fall scented things to make sure I cherished the remainder of summer, but when Pumpkin Spice Lattes hit Starbuck’s all my inner fall excitement was released.

I’m excited to see what all September has to hold. There’s lots going on as summer turns to fall, the air turns crisp, leaves begin to fall, and football games are played. School will start to become regular and lots of fun is to be had. I’m hopeful that this next month will be filled with light!

What brought you some brightness in August?

July was a busy, busy month. I dove into working and dog sitting & that filled the month. Looking back on my calendar, I only slept at my house for nine out of thirty-one days because I was constantly pet-sitting. I absolutely love house sitting, so it wasn’t a problem but I’m glad to be spending some time at home in August. I had a lot of good days with friends, catching up with some I hadn’t seen in a while and making the most out of being intentional with hanging out with people. That being said, with it being busy I didn’t have many new favroites but I had a few.

Starbucks Reusable Cold Cup – It’s really important, as human beings, to do our best to try to save the planet we’ve been given to live on. Recently, there seems to be more of a trend of brands being eco-conscious and promoting an eco-friendly message. One in particular that has been making headlines is Starbucks. It was recently announced that by 2020, Starbucks will be getting rid of all single-use plastic straws. I think this is a great start for a company with such influence to make a change. The whole ramble of this was brought on by a purchase I made of a venti reusable cold cup. It looks exactly like a regular disposable Starbucks cup, which I think makes it super adorable, and was a really great purchase. As I’m not a fan of hot drinks (other than the occasional mocha), buying a venti cold cup is the perfect thing for my regularly purchased Pink Drink. Plus, I get 10 cents off every drink. Saving the Earth and saving some money all while getting my Starbucks fix, what more could college girl want?

Raining Grace Jewelry Gold Dipped Leather Earrings – When I saw these earrings on Instagram, I immediately knew I wanted them in my life. When I heard that Raining Grace Jewelry was going to be at a local maker’s market, InstaCrafty, I had to go. I’ve gotten so much wear out of these earrings in the two months that I’ve had them. They’re comfortable in my sensitive earlobes, they manage to stand out from my crazy, curly hair, and they add a nice pop to every outfit. The particular ones I got are brown with a gold dip, so they pretty much go with everything that I wear. They can easily transition from casual to more dressed-up depending on what you’re wearing as well. I would highly recommend following Raining Grace on Instagram and picking up a pair of their earrings.

Warby Parker glasses – For the last couple of years, I have seen social media influencers promoting a brand called Warby Parker but never really thought much of it. I recently decided I wanted to get new glasses, mostly with the hopes that new ones would make me wear my glasses when I’m supposed to. I hate going to stores to shop for glasses so the option on Warby Parker to pick five pairs for an at home try on to get mailed to me was very appealing. You can take a quiz about your style preferences and face shape to get suggestions and help narrow down the options. Within 5 days of ordering my box, it got to my house. It was fun getting to try on and play with all the different glasses. I found one that I loved and decided to order. First of all, these glasses are very college budget friendly. For my single-vision lenses, the glasses cost $95. Normally, my glasses that I get from the eye doctor are a couple hundred dollars. When I found out you just upload a picture of your prescription when ordering, I was afraid it would take longer than expected to get my glasses. I was BLOWN AWAY when they arrived in the mail just around a week after placing my order. WHAT?! They also came with a super cute case that says “NICE TO SEE YOU” on the inside and a cleaning cloth that has the history of Warby Parker written in a fun way. I got the Brady glasses in tea rose fade and I’ve gotten so many compliments on them. I’m very pleased with this brand and would definitely buy from them again.

I probably say this every month, but June seemed to go by in the blink of an eye. That’s most likely due to the week-long trip. Vacations always make time go by so fast. So, what all went on in June? I went to Baltimore and Pennsylvania, saw Harry Styles (AMAZING BTW), turned 20, worked lots, spent time with friends, and did a lot of pet sitting. It was definitely a jam-packed month that I already know will be one of my favorites of 2018. Let’s get into some of my favorite things from this love of a month!

My Friends & Family – this may seem weird to list as a monthly favorite because I always love the people in my life, but this month I have just felt extra loved. On my birthday I was reminded of how lucky I am to have had so many lovely people support me over my 20 years of life. I’ve been truly blessed by some of the best people in the world and I can’t imagine life without them. My birthday dinner was filled with laughter and love and I could not be more happy with how it went.

Aubrey’s – Speaking of my birthday dinner, I had it at my new favorite restaurant Aubrey’s. I had never heard of Aubrey’s before it came to Johnson City and I have no idea why. It is really good! It’s a nice environment with reasonable prices (easy on a college budget). Plus, I got a free birthday dessert without even having to tell the waitress it was my birthday. They just noticed!

Colourpop’s New Lip Gloss – I’m always a fan of a nice lip gloss and Coloupop’s new line of lip glosses does not disappoint. They’re packed with jojoba oil for ultra moisturizing and the color payoff is incredible. The new brush is also really nice at covering well and just feels nice on the lips. My two favorites as of thus far are Here’s 2 U and Flying Horses.

Harry Styles Tour Merchandise – Of course, I need to take a minute to talk about the Harry Styles concert. How could I have a monthly favorite without it? There’s a whole blog post dedicated to the concert coming soon (cheeky reveal there), so, for now, I’ll just mention the merch. I got the softest sweatshirt I have ever felt thanks to my sister for charging her way through a big crowd to get to the merch table. It’s a vibrant yellow crew neck with “Kiwi” embroidered in black over the right side of the chest and “I’m having your baby” embroidered on the sleeve. I can’t wait for it to get chillier outside and I can wear it all the time. I also loved the tour shirts that were the same yellow shade with “treat people with kindness” printed big across the front. He uses his platform to bring so much positivity and love into the world. That’s a brand I can get behind!

“Magic” by Ben Rector – I. Love. This. Album. It’s filled with incredible songs that will just bring a smile to your face and make you want to get up and dance. I’ve had this album on repeat in my car every time I drive and in my headphones at work. I don’t have the proper words to even describe how great it is, so go do yourself a favor and give it a listen. You can thank me later.

Lush Daddy-O Shampoo – In my ever developing quest to change up my hair color, I recently got my hair dyed more blond. It’s not all blond, as that would require way more upkeep than my curly hair can handle, but it’s a balayage that we brought up higher. To help keep the blond looking its best, I got the Daddy-O purple shampoo from Lush. I’ve used it several times and I love it. I can tell it’s really helping to keep the blond from getting brassy and the smell is incredible. It has a mixture of fresh violet, rose, and bergamot oil that will leave your hair smelling beautiful for several days after you wash it. I actually caught myself at work smelling my hair at my desk two days post-wash because it still smelled amazing. Plus, it’s nice on the curls as well.

What are some things you’ve discovered and are loving this summer?

Oh, May! The month where flowers bloom, school comes to an end, and allergies creep there way into the lives of victims. It’s a crazy time of the year. This May, I wrapped up my second year of college at East Tennessee State University making the Dean’s List!! This was one of my goals for this year and I am so happy that I made it. This semester was a struggle and a half with just life issues that the universe threw my way, so I’m pretty darn proud of myself for managing to stay consistent in going to class and staying on top of all my assignments. Speaking of being proud, I am also very proud of my little sister for graduating high school (which technically was June 1 but I’ll count it in my May lookback). It’s crazy to think that my own graduation was two years ago when it just feels like yesterday! I’m super pros of the person I’ve gotten to watch my sister become and know she’s going to do great things in this world. Now, onto my favorites.

Glossier You – this perfume became an instant favorite and I can’t go a day without spraying it on. It’s a scent that is meant to mesh with your natural smell and enhance it, so no two people have the exact same smell. For that reason, it is hard to describe but trust me when I say it is incredible. It stays on all day and isn’t one of those overpowering scents that are going to give you and everyone around you a headache. It’s just the best & I HIGHLY recommend. I’ve gotten so many compliments on it since I started wearing it.

Pura Vida Bracelets – I’ve been a fan of Pura Vida Bracelets for years, but every time summer rolls around I seem to be reaching for them all the time. They are the perfect summer accessory because they’re lightweight, easy to pack when you’re going on vacation, can get wet, and add a pop of color and fun to every outfit. Their new summer collection is also absolutely adorable. They also help support local artisans in Costa Rica and they offer a large number of charity bracelets for a range of different causes and organizations! Cute bracelets that are working to better the word, what could be better? I actually recently joined their rep program, so if you want to check them out and get 20% off your order use code BAILEYDEVORE20.

Chaco “Juniper” Sandals – Here comes an unpopular opinion coming from an (almost) 20-year-old college student….I’ve never been that big of a fan of Chacos. This comes with a good reason though. I find the regular, rubber Chacos to be pretty uncomfortable. My arch in my foot is pretty small, so the intense arch support that rubber Chacos provide is too much for my feet. However, I do think they are super cute. I had been looking at the leather Chacos online after seeing a friend wear them, so when I found some on sale at a discount shoe store in Asheville I fell in love. They are SO COMFORTABLE on my feet as the arch support isn’t hard like the rubber Chacos. They fit like a dream and I have been wearing them non-stop since I got them. They are also a lot dressier than the rubber Chaco sandals and easy to dress up or down.

Warm Luxe Cashmere by Yankee Candle – Honestly, the best thing I have ever smelled. I am obsessed with this candle. So far, I’ve burned through two medium and one small classic jars of this scent. I find it very relaxing & soothing. I love lighting it at night and it’s just the most comforting scent. It has notes of rich vanilla and warm cashmere that make it smell like a dream. Every time I’m in the Yankee Candle store with someone I make them smell it immediately. So, so good.

Looking ahead, I can already assume what some of my June favorites might entail. I’m going to Pennsylvania this month to see family & Harry Styles, my golden birthday is the 20th when I’ll be turning 20, and this month just opens up to the possibility of many new adventures. Here’s to June bringing in summer days, long nights, and many memories. I can’t wait to see what this summer holds! What are you looking forward to this summer?

The Bright Spot: March 2017

I cannot believe how fast this year seems to be going by! March has come and nearly gone, and I have to say that it has not been my favorite. A lot happened in March and it seems like this month was trying to set me back in my place. I got the flu, missed a lot of school and work, and things just generally seem to be picking up! With all that said, I do have some things that I loved throughout the month of March that made day to day a little more positive.

1. Ed Sheeran’s new album, “Divide.”

I may not be the die-hard Ed Sheeran fan that my sister is, but I have loved his album “Divide” this month. You could almost guarantee that I was blasting it in my car everywhere I went. It’s a really nice mix of emotional songs that make you cry, upbeat songs that make you want to dance, and a little folk tune thrown in here and there. My favorite song from the album, at the moment, is definitely Happier.

2. Anything in the color blush/light pink.

I don’t know why I have liked the color blush so much recently, but my eye just seems to be drawn to it! My co-workers have begun noticing how much I love it and are pointing out blush colored things in the store to me. It is definitely going to be my Spring color.

3. LUSH imperialis facial moisturizer

This winter was not kind to my skin and left my face feeling very dry. When I got to stop by the LUSH store in Charleston, I decided to pick up the imperialis facial moisturizer. It has been a life saver! I use it every day under my makeup and it makes my foundation go on much smoother and there aren’t any dry patches.

4. Baby goats

I got to hold a baby goat (that looked like a baby cow because of it’s color) the other night at my friend’s farm, and it was the BEST thing! They were so cute and cuddly. The goat kept snuggling its head against my shoulder and it was adorable.

5. Everything to do with Spring & Easter

The last few weeks, the weather has been magnificent! I have been able to wear sandals every day and drive everywhere with my windows rolled down. Easter is also coming up and seeing all the decorations, themed snacks, and holiday things makes me super excited. One of my favorite spots to admire all the Easter things is definitely the Target dollar spot. They have amazing holiday items that won’t break the bank!

6. Yankee Candle’s new car charms

The new Yankee Candle car charms are phenomenal. They are like charm bracelets for your car! The quality of the scent power is really strong and lasts for quite a while. Plus, the charm is a really cute addition to my car. The old car jars would not stretch around my mirror, but the charm style scent holder fits just right.

7. Sunglasses

One thing I seem to be collecting right now is sunglasses. In the past I found it really hard to find ones that I like, but now that I work at Charming Charlie, I am surrounded by beautiful sunglasses! They come in so many styles and colors that it is hard not to find a pair that you like. Check them out in stores or online!

That wraps up this month’s edition of The Bright Spot! I hope March was a great month for you and that April is even better. Be careful out there on April Fools Day tomorrow; don’t let any pranksters fool you!
