THE BRIGHT SPOTS IN AUGUST

August marks the end of summer, the start of school, and overall a lot of changes. The leaves will soon begin to change, nights come earlier, and the temperature gets colder (well, that hasn’t really happened yet but me and my sweaters are eagerly awaiting the autumn weather). It was a busy month for sure, filled with highs and lows. My sister moved to Knoxville, I started my third year of college, I pet sat a lot, my car flooded, I had a sleepover with my best friend, worked a lot, and dealt with some family struggles. Through it all, there are always bright spots that be found shining through the darkness. Here are some things that provided light to me in August, and hopefully some of them can be a source of light for you!

Glossier Boy Brow – Where has this product been all of my life? I’m not gonna lie, I’m not the best at doing my brows. When the trend came the really shape your brows, I never learned how. My sister often poked fun at the way my eyebrows looked. Glossier’s Boy Brow has changed the game. It’s so easy to use, gives my brows volume, and keeps the hairs in place all day. I was a little skeptical to use it thinking it wouldn’t do much, but BOY was I wrong. I’m never going back to a brow pencil.

Back to School Shopping – Call me a nerd if you want, but I love back to school shopping. Getting new notebooks, pencils, pens, and all sort of supplies tend to really excite me! It’s one of the best parts of preparing to go back to school. Also, I’ve only had one week of classes but I’m really enjoying the classes I’m in. All of my professors seem really nice and I’ve made friends in all of them. I’m really excited to see where this semester takes me!

The Carrie Diaries on Netflix – After seeing clips of episodes from The Carrie Diaries pop up on my Instagram discover feed, I decided to give the show a watch. I’m really glad that I did! I’ve never seen Sex and the City, so I wasn’t sure if I’d like this show but I really did. However, it did make me wish I was in high school in the 80s. I’d love to just let my curly hair get as big as possible and whack a huge, neon bow in it every day. Plus, the blue eyeliner I rocked in middle school would have been perfect! I also now wish to be a writer in New York City who wears fabulous clothes every day.  I’m pretty sure it only took me a week to finish both seasons. I’ve been known to skip scenes in TV shows that I find “boring” because I have an attention span the size of a flea, but I never did that in any episodes of The Carrie Diaries. Follow up, why could there not have been more than two seasons?!

Fall Scented Everything – Yeah, that’s right! Fall scents have returned to candles, room diffusers, car air fresheners, soaps, and more. I couldn’t be happier about it! I did make myself wait until the end of August before buying any fall scented things to make sure I cherished the remainder of summer, but when Pumpkin Spice Lattes hit Starbuck’s all my inner fall excitement was released.

I’m excited to see what all September has to hold. There’s lots going on as summer turns to fall, the air turns crisp, leaves begin to fall, and football games are played. School will start to become regular and lots of fun is to be had. I’m hopeful that this next month will be filled with light!

What brought you some brightness in August?

JULY BRIGHT SPOTS

July was a busy, busy month. I dove into working and dog sitting & that filled the month. Looking back on my calendar, I only slept at my house for nine out of thirty-one days because I was constantly pet-sitting. I absolutely love house sitting, so it wasn’t a problem but I’m glad to be spending some time at home in August. I had a lot of good days with friends, catching up with some I hadn’t seen in a while and making the most out of being intentional with hanging out with people. That being said, with it being busy I didn’t have many new favroites but I had a few.

Starbucks Reusable Cold Cup – It’s really important, as human beings, to do our best to try to save the planet we’ve been given to live on. Recently, there seems to be more of a trend of brands being eco-conscious and promoting an eco-friendly message. One in particular that has been making headlines is Starbucks. It was recently announced that by 2020, Starbucks will be getting rid of all single-use plastic straws. I think this is a great start for a company with such influence to make a change. The whole ramble of this was brought on by a purchase I made of a venti reusable cold cup. It looks exactly like a regular disposable Starbucks cup, which I think makes it super adorable, and was a really great purchase. As I’m not a fan of hot drinks (other than the occasional mocha), buying a venti cold cup is the perfect thing for my regularly purchased Pink Drink. Plus, I get 10 cents off every drink. Saving the Earth and saving some money all while getting my Starbucks fix, what more could college girl want?

Raining Grace Jewelry Gold Dipped Leather Earrings – When I saw these earrings on Instagram, I immediately knew I wanted them in my life. When I heard that Raining Grace Jewelry was going to be at a local maker’s market, InstaCrafty, I had to go. I’ve gotten so much wear out of these earrings in the two months that I’ve had them. They’re comfortable in my sensitive earlobes, they manage to stand out from my crazy, curly hair, and they add a nice pop to every outfit. The particular ones I got are brown with a gold dip, so they pretty much go with everything that I wear. They can easily transition from casual to more dressed-up depending on what you’re wearing as well. I would highly recommend following Raining Grace on Instagram and picking up a pair of their earrings.

Warby Parker glasses – For the last couple of years, I have seen social media influencers promoting a brand called Warby Parker but never really thought much of it. I recently decided I wanted to get new glasses, mostly with the hopes that new ones would make me wear my glasses when I’m supposed to. I hate going to stores to shop for glasses so the option on Warby Parker to pick five pairs for an at home try on to get mailed to me was very appealing. You can take a quiz about your style preferences and face shape to get suggestions and help narrow down the options. Within 5 days of ordering my box, it got to my house. It was fun getting to try on and play with all the different glasses. I found one that I loved and decided to order. First of all, these glasses are very college budget friendly. For my single-vision lenses, the glasses cost $95. Normally, my glasses that I get from the eye doctor are a couple hundred dollars. When I found out you just upload a picture of your prescription when ordering, I was afraid it would take longer than expected to get my glasses. I was BLOWN AWAY when they arrived in the mail just around a week after placing my order. WHAT?! They also came with a super cute case that says “NICE TO SEE YOU” on the inside and a cleaning cloth that has the history of Warby Parker written in a fun way. I got the Brady glasses in tea rose fade and I’ve gotten so many compliments on them. I’m very pleased with this brand and would definitely buy from them again.

MUST HAVE MAY FAVORITES

Oh, May! The month where flowers bloom, school comes to an end, and allergies creep there way into the lives of victims. It’s a crazy time of the year. This May, I wrapped up my second year of college at East Tennessee State University making the Dean’s List!! This was one of my goals for this year and I am so happy that I made it. This semester was a struggle and a half with just life issues that the universe threw my way, so I’m pretty darn proud of myself for managing to stay consistent in going to class and staying on top of all my assignments. Speaking of being proud, I am also very proud of my little sister for graduating high school (which technically was June 1 but I’ll count it in my May lookback). It’s crazy to think that my own graduation was two years ago when it just feels like yesterday! I’m super pros of the person I’ve gotten to watch my sister become and know she’s going to do great things in this world. Now, onto my favorites.

Glossier You – this perfume became an instant favorite and I can’t go a day without spraying it on. It’s a scent that is meant to mesh with your natural smell and enhance it, so no two people have the exact same smell. For that reason, it is hard to describe but trust me when I say it is incredible. It stays on all day and isn’t one of those overpowering scents that are going to give you and everyone around you a headache. It’s just the best & I HIGHLY recommend. I’ve gotten so many compliments on it since I started wearing it.

Pura Vida Bracelets – I’ve been a fan of Pura Vida Bracelets for years, but every time summer rolls around I seem to be reaching for them all the time. They are the perfect summer accessory because they’re lightweight, easy to pack when you’re going on vacation, can get wet, and add a pop of color and fun to every outfit. Their new summer collection is also absolutely adorable. They also help support local artisans in Costa Rica and they offer a large number of charity bracelets for a range of different causes and organizations! Cute bracelets that are working to better the word, what could be better? I actually recently joined their rep program, so if you want to check them out and get 20% off your order use code BAILEYDEVORE20.

Chaco “Juniper” Sandals – Here comes an unpopular opinion coming from an (almost) 20-year-old college student….I’ve never been that big of a fan of Chacos. This comes with a good reason though. I find the regular, rubber Chacos to be pretty uncomfortable. My arch in my foot is pretty small, so the intense arch support that rubber Chacos provide is too much for my feet. However, I do think they are super cute. I had been looking at the leather Chacos online after seeing a friend wear them, so when I found some on sale at a discount shoe store in Asheville I fell in love. They are SO COMFORTABLE on my feet as the arch support isn’t hard like the rubber Chacos. They fit like a dream and I have been wearing them non-stop since I got them. They are also a lot dressier than the rubber Chaco sandals and easy to dress up or down.

Warm Luxe Cashmere by Yankee Candle – Honestly, the best thing I have ever smelled. I am obsessed with this candle. So far, I’ve burned through two medium and one small classic jars of this scent. I find it very relaxing & soothing. I love lighting it at night and it’s just the most comforting scent. It has notes of rich vanilla and warm cashmere that make it smell like a dream. Every time I’m in the Yankee Candle store with someone I make them smell it immediately. So, so good.

Looking ahead, I can already assume what some of my June favorites might entail. I’m going to Pennsylvania this month to see family & Harry Styles, my golden birthday is the 20th when I’ll be turning 20, and this month just opens up to the possibility of many new adventures. Here’s to June bringing in summer days, long nights, and many memories. I can’t wait to see what this summer holds! What are you looking forward to this summer?

LOCAL BUSINESS LOVE

I am a huge supporter of small/local businesses. I think anyone who has the strength, knowledge, & ability to go out there and start their own business is a superhero! For this very reason, I want to highlight some of my favorite local businesses (maybe start a “small business Saturday” series once a month?) to highlight some of these super cool people & amazing products.

Boomtown & Co: First up on my list is Boomtown & Co. This is a store in downtown Johnson City that I have been Instagram stalking for a long time & just recently got to experience. They create t-shirts, hats, stickers, and more all with a local to Johnson City & the surrounding areas theme. I walked in & immediately fell in love. Their store itself is really cute & the things they had for sale were amazing. I got an ETSU shirt that is now the softest shirt that I own. It’s unlike any other ETSU shirt I’ve seen & I couldn’t be happier with it.

Mimi’s Creamery: One of my favorite places to get a delicious, sweet treat is Mimi’s Creamery. This is an adorable ice cream truck that is also very cute. They make delicious ice cream & cookies & combining the two in some of the most incredible sandwiches. It’s the perfect thing to help you cool down on a hot summer day. Although, the ice cream sandwiches are huge so I suggest sharing or just getting one cookie and some ice cream.

Label: Another food place I absolutely love is the Label. They’re my go-to lunch place for HALF-PRICE SUSHI on weekdays! Their sushi is the bomb & it’s not your average sushi rolls. One of my favorites is called “the Bakersfield” and it’s topped with bacon. Need I say more? They also have some amazing burgers and lots of yummy food.

LucyBirdHandmades: A recent jewelry favorite of mine has been earrings made by LucyBirdHandmades. They are the most adorable leather teardrop-shaped earrings. I got a pair to wear on Easter and now wear them all the time. They’re super light so they don’t bother my overly sensitive ears, and they’re the perfect size to stand out from my giant, curly hair.

These are just a few of my favorite local/small businesses. I love supporting businesses like these and think their products are some of the best you could ever find. Make sure to check them all out (titles are hyperlinked) and let me know what some of your favorite local businesses are. Is there any from Johnson City I should try out?

The Bright Spot: February 2017

Now that I don’t feel like complete death (just slightly dead inside now) thanks to the flu I have decided I want to start a monthly list of things that have made me smile and brightened my month called “The Bright Spot!” It’s basically my favorites from the past month. Certain things can turn your month in to a complete positive when you look back at it. I thought it would be nice to share some things that I have been loving or just things from the month that were particularly positives. I am hoping this will inspire you to either discover new things or notice things already in front of you that you love and make you happy!

1. Spring Weather

One of my favorite things to do is roll down the windows of my Chevrolet Malibu and drive around with my music blasting when the weather is nice. This month seemed to produce some really nice days to do just that! I felt myself wanting to go outside more, I got to break out my sandals, and beautiful trees and flowers seem to have begun blooming. I love when it snows but something about this Spring just seems to be getting me really excited!

2. Makeup

I may have had a little splurge in February when it came to the makeup department, but when you have a 20 % off coupon for Ulta and Colourpop offers free shipping it is hard to resist. I’m going to talk through a few makeup products I discovered, and have been loving, this month.

– First is Colourpop Lippie Stix and Super Shock Highlighters. This makeup brand has changed my life! It is quality makeup that is extremely affordable. What isn’t there to love? They’re lippie stix are extremely long lasting and not super drying and they have so many gorgeous color choices! I have about 6 of them and am slowly making my way to owning every shade. They just came out with a creme formula nude lippie stix which I really want to try! Visit Colourpop’s website!

– Second to mention is Real Techniques makeup brushes. I discovered Real Techinques at a recent Ulta visit and in the words of DJ Tanner from Full House, “oh my lanta!” I got the expert face blush for base and it is fantastic. Super soft and does a great job!

– Third and last in the makeup category is Benefit’s POREfessional. This stuff has been a real life changer. If there’s one thing I have it’s huge pores on my nose and this product does an excellent job of blurring them and also works as a great primer!

3. Hats

I have always loved the idea of floppy hats. I think they are adorable and when you don’t feel like doing your hair they’re a great way to hide it while looking cute! However, I never though they were for me because I have really big curly hair and not to mention a pretty big head. I decided to go ahead and buy one anyway and I LOVE it. It’s been a lifesaver on days that I’ve felt poorly and just haven’t felt like dealing with my hair.

This one I got from Charming Charlie at the Mall of Johnson City. Wearing it with a choker (also from CC) gave me a cool “American Horror Story Coven” vibe in the words of my wonderful coworker!

4. Maurice’s Spring Clothes

When I walked in to Maurice’s a couple of weeks ago and saw all of their Spring clothes I was overjoyed. They had so many things that I loved and I may have went a little crazy. I just can’t resist a nice olive green or blush pink clothing item! They’re a store I’ve always loved and I have to say their new Spring clothes for 2017 exceeded all my expectations. I definitely recommend you checking them out in store or Online!
What were some things that made your February more positive?

I hope you all had a wonderful February, and to my fellow ETSU students enjoy Spring Break!!

Bailey
